A
recent blog article in the USA has illustrated the huge level of illegal
vehicle dismantling activity in the USA. We already know that there is a problem in the
UK,
with 600,000 vehicles disappearing every year, and it is currently estimated
that in the EU 4-5 million vehicles go missing every year. Clearly, this is a world-wide phenomenon.
The
USA
study took place 01/12/2013 – 01/03/2014.
Illegal auto parts sellers were defined as unlicensed operators advertising
>10 parts.
This
study results underline the significant economic implications for the USA, including:
- estimated lost sales taxes of
$27 million per year
- significant portion of these
parts probably associated with auto theft and/or insurance fraud
